How to Prevent Ketosis in Early Lactation Cows

The Energy Gap in High-Yielders
After calving, a high-producing Holstein-Friesian (HF) crossbred cow's milk yield rises rapidly, but her appetite (Dry Matter Intake) takes weeks to fully recover. If she burns fat too fast, the liver gets overwhelmed and produces ketones, leading to clinical or subclinical ketosis. Spotting the Signs Early
Look for warning signs: a sudden drop in milk fat/yield, a dull appearance, selective eating (eating bhusa/dry straw but refusing concentrate and sarson ki khali), and a distinct sweet, acetone smell in the cow's breath, urine, or milk. Checking milk with ketone test strips 5 to 15 days post-calving is a cheap way to catch subclinical cases early.
Feeding Energy Boosters Pre and Post Calving
Bridge the energy gap by feeding high-quality energy supplements. Rumen-protected bypass fats and bypass proteins should be introduced in the close-up dry period (3 weeks before calving) and continued through peak lactation. For cows showing early signs, feeding liquid glucogenic precursors (like propylene glycol or calcium propionate) for 5-7 days provides an instant energy surge to the liver.
Avoid Fat Cow Syndrome
A major risk factor for ketosis is dry cows becoming overweight. Over-conditioned cows (BCS > 3.75) have highly suppressed appetites after calving and mobilize fat much faster, triggering ketosis. Limit high-starch concentrates during the dry period and maintain a body condition score of 3.0 to 3.25 at calving.
