Monsoon Mud and Bacterial Invasion

Foot rot is a painful, foul-smelling bacterial infection of the interdigital skin of the hoof, caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum. In North Indian monsoons, cows are often forced to stand in wet mud, dung, and water. This constant moisture softens the hoof skin, allowing bacteria to enter through tiny cuts or abrasions, leading to severe lameness, fever, and a quick drop in milk production.

Installing a Copper Sulfate Foot Bath

The most effective prevention is a walk-through foot bath. Set up a shallow trough (3-4 meters long, 10-15 cm deep) filled with a 5% copper sulfate (neela thotha) or 5% formalin solution at the parlor exit. Walking cows through this bath 2-3 times a week disinfects the hooves, hardens the horn, and kills foot rot bacteria before they cause deep infection.

Keeping the Shed Floor Dry

Standing water and slurry are foot rot's best friends. Grade the shed floor to ensure urine and wash water drain away instantly. Spread dry sand, agricultural lime, or sawdust on muddy standing zones. If possible, design a concrete dry pad where cows can stand for at least 4-6 hours daily to let their hooves dry out completely.

Treating Active Cases

If a cow is already limping, wash the hoof thoroughly with clean water and disinfect with potassium permanganate. Apply antiseptic copper sulfate paste or zinc oxide ointment, wrap the hoof to keep it dry, and consult your veterinarian for systemic antibiotics if fever or deep swelling is present.
