Lumpy Skin Disease is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle caused by the Capripoxvirus. It is spread primarily by blood-feeding insects like mosquitoes, biting flies, and ticks. In North India (Punjab, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan), outbreaks often spike during the warm, humid monsoon months when vector populations surge. The disease causes painful skin nodules, high fever, swelling of limbs, and a sudden drop in milk yield, making prevention a priority.
The Power of Mosquito and Fly Control
Since LSD is vector-borne, controlling flies and mosquitoes is your first line of defense. Keep the cattle shed dry and apply lime powder to absorb moisture. Use mosquito nets, smoke pots with dry neem leaves in the evenings, and fly-repellent sprays or herbal oils (like neem and eucalyptus oil) on the animals. Eliminate any standing water puddles around the farm where mosquitoes breed.
Vaccination and Quarantine Protocols
The goat pox vaccine is highly effective in crossbred cattle and buffaloes against LSD when administered annually. If a cow shows symptoms (lumpy nodules, fever), isolate her immediately in a separate quarantine area at least 15-20 meters away. Clean all water troughs and feeders with disinfectant (like potassium permanganate) to prevent spread through saliva.
Supporting Recovery and Immunity
For infected animals, provide soft green fodder like berseem or napier grass that is easy to chew, and fresh, clean water.
