Why Calf Housing Design Reduces Mortality
Properly designed calf housing can reduce mortality by up to 40% — a figure that translates directly to profit. In Indian conditions, the three biggest killers of young calves are respiratory infections, diarrhoea, and heat stress, each of which is heavily influenced by housing. Ventilation, space, and cleanliness are not luxuries — they are the most cost-effective interventions a dairy farmer can make.
Ventilation: The Non-Negotiable
Calves produce moisture, heat, and ammonia through respiration and waste. Without adequate ventilation, these accumulate and create the perfect environment for respiratory pathogens. The minimum standard is 4-6 air exchanges per hour in enclosed housing. Open-sided sheds with ridge ventilation provide this naturally. A simple test: if it smells stale or your glasses fog up when entering, ventilation is inadequate. Positive-pressure tube ventilation systems can be installed for approximately ₹15,000-25,000 and pay for themselves within months through reduced mortality.
Space and Pen Design
Individual calf pens should be at least 2.4 m x 1.2 m (8 ft x 4 ft). Group pens need 1.5-2.0 m² per calf. Flooring should be well-drained and non-slip — concrete with a gentle slope (1:20 gradient) works well. Deep bedding (at least 10 cm of dry straw or rice hulls) provides insulation and comfort. Solid partitions between individual pens reduce disease transmission, while open partitions in group pens allow social contact.
Shade and Heat Management
In tropical Indian climates, shade is critical. A roof with at least 3 metres of clearance allows hot air to rise away from calves. Reflective roofing material or white paint can reduce radiant heat by 10-15°C. Orient sheds east-west to minimise direct sun exposure during the hottest part of the day. Sprinklers or misters in the afternoon can reduce heat stress, but must be combined with good ventilation to avoid humidity buildup.
Good housing is the cheapest veterinary intervention. Prioritise ventilation (4-6 air changes/hour), dry bedding (10 cm+), and shade. The investment in a well-designed calf shed pays for itself in reduced mortality and better growth.
