The AM/PM Rule Explained
The AM/PM rule is simple: cows detected in standing heat in the morning should be inseminated that same afternoon; cows detected in heat in the evening should be inseminated the following morning. This 12-hour delay aligns insemination with ovulation, which occurs 10-14 hours after the end of standing heat. Conception rates following the AM/PM rule average 55-65%, compared to 40-50% for poorly timed inseminations.
Semen Handling: The Critical Details
Semen quality degrades rapidly with temperature shock. Thaw straws in 35-37°C water for 40 seconds — never warmer, never longer. Dry the straw immediately after thawing. Load into the insemination gun within 15 seconds. Protect from direct sunlight and cold wind. The temperature between thawing and deposition should never fluctuate. A simple Styrofoam holder with a warm water vial can maintain temperature on the way to the cow.
The 12-Hour Window
The optimal window for insemination is mid to late standing heat. Inseminating too early (at first signs of heat) or too late (after standing heat has ended) reduces conception rates. The egg is viable for only 6-12 hours after ovulation, while sperm retain fertility for 24-30 hours in the female tract. Timing insemination so that viable sperm are waiting when the egg is released maximises the chance of fertilisation.
Technique Matters as Much as Timing
Pass the insemination gun through the cervix with a gentle, rotating motion. Never force it — cervical damage reduces conception rates. Deposit semen in the uterine body (just past the cervix), not in the cervix itself. The entire process from thawing to deposition should take less than 10 minutes. Keep meticulous records: cow ID, sire used, date, time, and inseminator. Review your conception rates regularly to identify areas for improvement.
