Zeolite — The New Frontier in Milk Fever Prevention
How binding dietary phosphorus instead of acidifying the diet reshapes calcium metabolism. A DCAD alternative gaining traction since 2017.
A New Approach to an Old Problem
Milk fever (hypocalcemia) affects 1-5% of cows clinically, but subclinical hypocalcemia impacts 25-45% of cows in most herds. The traditional prevention strategy — negative DCAD diets — works by inducing mild metabolic acidosis to improve calcium mobilisation. But DCAD diets require consistent low-potassium forages, reduce dry matter intake, and need constant urine pH monitoring. Zeolite offers a fundamentally different approach that targets phosphorus rather than acid-base balance.
How Zeolite Works
Zeolite binds dietary phosphorus in the gastrointestinal tract. When phosphorus absorption drops, the cow mobilises bone reserves to restore blood phosphorus levels. Because bone contains both phosphorus and calcium in a fixed ratio (approximately 1:2), this bone mobilisation releases calcium into circulation. Unlike DCAD, which relies on parathyroid hormone sensitivity, zeolite operates through the FGF-23 pathway — a separate biological mechanism that regulates phosphate and vitamin D metabolism.
Practical Advantages Over DCAD
Zeolite eliminates the need for urine pH monitoring. It doesn't reduce dry matter intake because it doesn't induce metabolic acidosis. It allows greater flexibility in forage selection — producers can use haylage, rye, and sorghum that would be restricted in DCAD programs. And it reduces dependence on post-calving calcium supplementation, lowering labour and treatment costs. For farms struggling with DCAD implementation or looking for a simpler protocol, zeolite is increasingly attractive.
When Zeolite Works Best
Zeolite is most effective in low-to-moderate phosphorus diets. High-phosphorus diets (containing distillers grains or canola meal) can saturate the zeolite, reducing its effectiveness. In these cases, DCAD remains the more reliable strategy. The key is understanding your herd's specific challenges — is calcium the problem, or is phosphorus management the real opportunity? Work with your veterinarian to decide which approach, or combination, fits your operation.
