Why Buffaloes Stop Cycling in Summer
Water buffaloes (especially the Murrah breed) have dark skin, thick hair, and fewer sweat glands than cattle, making them highly vulnerable to heat stress. During extreme North Indian summers, their internal body temperature rises. This disrupts the pituitary gland, shutting down hormone pathways and causing anestrus (complete stoppage of heat cycles).
Silent Heat and Night-Time Monitoring
Buffaloes rarely show strong behavioral heat signs in summer. Instead, they express 'silent heat'. Furthermore, what little heat behavior they do show occurs during the coolest hours—usually between 10 PM and 4 AM. Walk through the shed at midnight and early dawn, inspecting the vulva for clear, thread-like mucus discharge.
Water Cooling and Pond Access
Body cooling is the single most effective breeding intervention. Provide access to wallowing ponds for 2 hours daily, or run sprinklers and fans in the shed 3-4 times a day. Keeping the buffalo's body temperature normal allows progesterone and estrogen hormones to rise, triggering normal, visible heat cycles.
Nutritional Support for Summer Breeding
Metabolic energy is low in summer due to reduced feed intake. Supplement their feed with high-energy bypass fats and bypass proteins to maintain body weight. Add mineral mixtures rich in vitamin E and selenium to support ovarian function and egg development.
