Rumen-Protected Choline — The 1.29 kg/day Transition Edge

Meta-analysis of 30 studies confirms: proper choline supplementation lifts milk by 1.29 kg/day and speeds DMI recovery after calving.

Choline's Critical Role in Transition

Choline is an essential nutrient that composes phosphatidylcholine, the molecule required for forming Very Low-Density Lipoproteins (VLDL). Without VLDL, the liver cannot export triglycerides, leading to hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver) — a condition that affects 40-60% of high-producing cows in early lactation. The transition cow's liver is uniquely vulnerable because negative energy balance triggers massive fat mobilisation at the same time that feed intake is suppressed.

Why Rumen Protection Matters

Unprotected choline is degraded by rumen microbes — over 85% is destroyed before reaching the small intestine. Rumen-Protected Choline (RPC) uses a coating of saturated fat or pH-sensitive polymer that survives the rumen and releases choline in the abomasum and small intestine. Without this protection, dietary choline supplementation is essentially worthless. This is why you'll never see results from mixing regular feed-grade choline into TMR.

The Evidence: 1.29 kg/Day More Milk

A 2025 systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of 30 studies showed that RPC supplementation during the transition period increased dry matter intake by 0.48 kg/day and milk yield by 1.29 kg/day. The optimal dose was approximately 13-14 g/day of choline chloride equivalent. At higher supplementation levels (15-21 g/day), 3.5% fat-corrected milk increased by up to 2.19 kg/day. Milk fat and protein yields also improved, while milk composition percentages remained unchanged.

Practical Implementation

Start RPC supplementation 3 weeks before expected calving date and continue through 3-4 weeks post-calving. The effective dose is 15-21 g/day of choline chloride equivalent, delivered through a commercial RPC product. Work with your nutritionist to incorporate RPC into the close-up and fresh-cow ration. The response is most pronounced in over-conditioned multiparous cows (BCS > 3.5), so prioritise these animals if budget is limited.

✦ Key Takeaway

RPC supports liver fat export, reducing ketosis and fatty liver. Feed 15-21 g/day from 3 weeks pre-calving through 4 weeks post-calving. Expect +1.29 kg/day milk and faster DMI recovery. Only protected forms work — unprotected choline is destroyed in the rumen.
