Why Monsoon Multiplies Mastitis Risk
The monsoon season creates ideal conditions for mastitis-causing bacteria. Humidity above 80%, wet bedding, and muddy walkways allow environmental pathogens like E. coli and Streptococcus uberis to multiply rapidly. Studies from Indian dairies show clinical mastitis rates increase 2-3 times during monsoon months. The key is not just treating cases faster — it's preventing the conditions that cause them.
Shed Hygiene: The First Line of Defence
Clean, dry bedding is non-negotiable. Remove wet bedding daily and replace with fresh, dry material. Ensure shed roofs don't leak and that drainage channels prevent water from pooling. Lime powder on walkways helps control moisture and has mild antibacterial properties. Cows should never be forced to lie down in mud or slurry — this is when teat ends come into direct contact with pathogens.
The Pre-Dip and Post-Dip Routine
Pre-dipping with a disinfectant solution (0.5% iodine or chlorhexidine) kills bacteria on the teat skin before milking. Contact time matters — minimum 30 seconds. Wipe dry with a single-use paper towel. After milking, apply a post-dip that contains a skin conditioner to prevent chapping. Teat dips with 10% glycerine or lanolin help maintain skin integrity during wet months when chapping is more common.
The California Mastitis Test (CMT)
The CMT is a simple, affordable field test every dairy farmer should know. Mix a small amount of milk from each quarter with the CMT reagent in a paddle. The gel formation tells you the somatic cell count — no gel means healthy, slight gel means subclinical infection, strong gel with clots means clinical mastitis. Test every cow weekly during monsoon and any cow with a history of mastitis year-round.
Monsoon mastitis is preventable. Keep sheds dry, use pre- and post-dip without fail, and run the California Mastitis Test weekly during rainy months to catch subclinical cases before they turn clinical.
