Understanding DCP and TDN

Digestible Crude Protein (DCP) and Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) are the two foundation metrics of dairy cattle nutrition. DCP tells you how much protein the cow can actually absorb, while TDN measures the energy available from the feed. A crossbred cow producing 10 litres of milk daily requires roughly 0.8-1.0 kg of DCP and 8-10 kg of TDN, though exact requirements vary with body weight, stage of lactation, and environmental conditions.

Step 1: Calculate Your Cow's Requirements

Start with body weight. A 400 kg cow requires about 2.5% of her body weight in dry matter — roughly 10 kg of DM per day. For maintenance, she needs 3.2 kg of DCP and 35 MJ of energy. For every litre of milk produced at 4% fat, add 0.85 kg of DCP and 5.3 MJ of energy. A 10-litre cow therefore needs approximately 0.85 kg DCP for milk plus 3.2 kg for maintenance = 1.05 kg DCP total, and about 88 MJ of energy.

Step 2: Assess Your Available Feeds

Common Indian feedstuffs vary widely in quality. Green maize fodder contains about 8% DCP and 65% TDN on a dry matter basis. Wheat straw offers only 2% DCP and 40% TDN. Concentrate mixtures typically provide 18-20% DCP and 75-80% TDN. The key is balancing the ration so that the cow receives adequate protein and energy without excessive fibre or starch that could disrupt rumen fermentation.

Step 3: Build the Ration

A balanced ration for a 400 kg crossbred cow at 10 litres might look like: 15 kg green fodder (maize or napier), 5 kg dry fodder (wheat straw), and 4 kg concentrate mixture. This provides roughly 10.5 kg DM, 1.1 kg DCP, and 85 MJ energy — meeting her requirements. Adjust the concentrate proportion up or down based on actual milk production and body condition.
